Yanga gears up for Cecafa Kagame Cup defence
Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - The Young Africans (Yanga) of Tanzania, the Cecafa Kagame Club Cup champions, are taking their defence of the title this year seriously after hiring new coach Tom Saintfiet.
Saintfiet, a Belgian who was recently offloaded as Nigerian national team technical director, was due in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian capital, on Tuesday and was to go straight into preparing Yanga for the start of the Kagame Cup on 14 July.
Yanga will play Atletico of Burundi in one of two opening Group ‘C’ fixtures that will launch the tournament at the National Stadium on 14 July and which will conclude with a 29 July final.
Eleven teams will be taking part, including new entrants Wau Salam of South Sudan and invited guests, the big club from DR Congo, AS Vita of Kinshasa.
Kenyan Premier League champions, Tusker, current leaders in their domestic season and eight-time winners of the Cecafa event, will be returning to Dar es Salaam, the site of their last triumph in 2008.
The Cecafa Kagame Cup is one of the two events that brings together senior teams drawn from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) members.
The regional football body also organises youth tournament.
President Paul Kagame of Rwanda sponsors the tournament with the US$ 60,000 [Sh5.1 million] prize money, with the winner getting US$ 30,000 [Sh2.5 m], runners-up US$ 20,000 [Sh1.7m] and bronze medallist US$ 10,000 [Sh850, 000].
