Uganda to host International Muslim Youth Conference
Kampala, Uganda (PANA) - Uganda will host a two-day conference of Muslim Youth, with participants from across the African continent, a spokesperson of the Islamic leadership in the country has said.
The conference, dubbed the International Muslim youth conference, will take place on April 26-27 in Kampala and is expected to be opened by President Yoweri Museveni.
“The youths will discuss the nature of contemporary changes and their negative and positive effects on Muslim youth in African and how to activate the role of young Muslims in communities to promote Africa and enhance confidence in the continent,” Muhamad Ali Waiswa, the second Deputy Mufti of Uganda, said during a news conference at the Gaddafi Mosque in Kampala.
He said youth from 25 countries are expected to attend, although those who had confirmed attendance by the time of the press conference were from 15 countries. The countries are Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Egypt, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, the Gambia, Senegal, Mozambique and South Africa.
Uganda, a secular country, is predominantly Christian, with only 14% of Ugandans, according to the latest census in 2014, being Muslim. The Muslims, however, have significant influence in the country, and Uganda is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).
