US strongly condemns Al-Shabaab's attack on AU peacekeepers in Somalia

Washington, DC, US (PANA) - The United States has strongly condemned Friday's attack by Al-Shabaab in Buulo Mareer on the Ugandan peacekeeping forces deployed to the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS) in Somalia.

A statement issued by Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the US State Department, expressed the US' deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wished a full recovery to those injured.

"The United States commends the bravery and sacrifice of the troops participating in this important mission.  We stand with our Somali and African Union partners in the fight to defeat terrorism and to advance peace and stability for the Somali people," the statement said.

The Al-Shabaab terrorist group attacked the base of the Ugandan peacekeepers and claimed they captured it and killed dozens of peacekeepers.

There are no details of casualties from the African Union or Uganda.
