UNHCR evacuates another 32 refugees from Libya to Canada and Norway

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - A total of 32 refugees, including children, were evacuated in a new operation organized by the UNHCR from Libya to Canada and Norway for resettlement, illustrating continued efforts to place refugees and other vulnerable people trapped in the North African country.

"UNHCR helped 32 refugees, including young children, fly out of Libya this week to resettle in Canada and Norway, with logistical support from IOM (Global Organization for Migration) in Libya," UNHRC wrote in a tweet on Tuesday.

The same source said that "UNHCR is calling for safer legal channels for others to find safety outside Libya'.

In mid-September, last year, UNHCR evacuated 29 refugees from Libya for resettlement in Canada and Europe. More than 100 vulnerable asylum seekers were evacuated by UNHCR in early September via a flight from Libya to safety in Rwanda.

At the end of August, 41 refugees were flown out of Libya for resettlement in Norway by UNHCR, which earlier this month evacuated 19 refugees and asylum seekers to Europe.

A flight to Italy was chartered by UNHCR in July to transport 85 vulnerable asylum seekers from the capital, Tripoli, via the UNHCR.

UNHCR has evacuated 997 asylum-seekers from Libya to Italy since 2017, while 8,372 people left Libya on evacuation or resettlement journeys or via alternative routes during the same period.
