Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has decided, after 30 years of collaboration, to suspend its cooperation and partnership with the Tunisian Red Crescent, an official source told PANA here Monday.
The suspension, the source explained, followed several failures by the Tunisian humanitarian institution during the project related to the protection of refugees and asylum seekers in the governorate of Medenine, southeastern Tunisia, said the source close to UNHCR.
These failings have caused problems between Tunisian security, refugees, asylum seekers, civil society and the populations of the area, said the same source.
The Tunisian Red Crescent has been officially informed in writing by UNHCR, the source added.
Refugees are living in very difficult conditions at reception centers in southern Tunisia, a region that is very poor in terms of the means to meet the humanitarian and health needs.
With the exception of local organizations, there are no government officials at these centres.
