UNGA78: South African, Burundian presidents to address UN General Assembly
Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye are in New York to attend the General Debate of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78).
Member states are this week participating in the annual General Debate, the most widely watched event in the UN’s annual calendar.
“It is a one-of-a-kind moment each year for leaders from every corner of the globe to not only assess the state of the world but to act for the common good,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters ahead of the two-day meeting which opens on Monday.
Presiden Ramaphosa will deliver the South Africa statement to the assembly on Tuesday. He will also be leading discussions during the presidential roundtable to be hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce and US-Africa Business Centre.
The dialogues will be focused on maternal and newborn health, pandemic prevention and climate. He will also be speaking on actions to speed up progress on attaining the sustainable development goals.
UNGA78 is convened under the auspices: “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.”
The theme has been set by the incoming President of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago.
