Togo: UN official visits Togo ahead of March elections
Lomé, Togo (PANA) – The UN deputy Secretary General for political affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, who has begun a visit to Lomé on Tuesday, has reviewed issued related to elections in Togo in March with the Togolese political stakeholders, official sources said on Wednesday.
"We hope that the poll will meet the aspirations of the Togolese people and that it will be free and fair," he said at the end of an audience with the Togolese president, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.
In addition to meeting with president Gnassingbé, Mr. Feltman, accompanied by Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the special representative of the UN secretary general for West Africa, held talks with the Togolese minister of Territorial administration and Decentralization, Gilbert Bawara, whose administration is in charge of the elections, as well as some ambassadors accredited to Togo, including those of the European Union, France, Germany and the United States.
The UN deputy Secretary General also discussed with the political stakeholders, particularly the national alliance for change (ANC), the action committee for regeneration (CAR), the Alliance of democrats for integral development (ADDI), the Combat for political change in 2015 (CAP 2015) and the civil society organizations.
Togo will hold its presidential election in March but issues related to institutional and constitutional reforms, demanded by the opposition, are expected to be resolved before then.
