'Taxes, subsidies determine gasoline prices around the world'
Dakar, Sénégal (PANA) - There is substantial difference in the prices of gasoline across the globe, although as a general rule, rich countries have higher prices and poor States and the countries that produce and export oil have significantly lower prices.
PANA learnt that the differences in prices are due to the various taxes and subsidies for gasoline.
All countries have access to the same petroleum prices at the international markets but then decide to impose different taxes.
As a result, the retail price of gasoline is different, while the average price around the world on 30 July, is US$1.17 per liter.
However, one notable exception is the U.S. which is an economically-advanced country but has low gas prices.
