Systems failure at power plant plunges Ghana into darkness

Accra, Ghana (PANA) – Several regions in Ghana were on Friday night plunged into darkness following a systems failure at a transmission plant in Tema, 25 km east of Accra.

The problem at the power transmission plant of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) affected the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western regions and a number of others on the north of the country.

Officials say power has been restored to many of the affected areas but it is not clear when all consumers would have power.

GRIDCO is one of three state-owned companies involved in the supply of electricity in Ghana.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) generates power, GRIDCO is in charge of transmission to substations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that supplies power to consumers.
