Suspected cases of Ebola virus disease spotted in Guinea
Conakry, Guinea (PANA) – Suspected cases of Ebola virus disease were detected on Saturday in the Guinean southern region of Nzerekore, about 1,000 km from the capital Conakry, official sources said on Sunday.
In a communiqué, the National Health Security Agency (ANSS) confirmed the existence of suspected cases of the Ebola virus disease and said all measures were taken to avoid any excess.
Among those measures is the acquisition of anti-Ebola vaccines from the World Health Organization (WHO) with a view to possibly vaccinate all people in the affected zone.
The same sources added that following a recent burial, eight (8) cases of diarrhoea, vomiting and bleeding were reported, leaving three dead in Goueke sub-prefecture, 45 km from N’Zerekore, administrative district of the region, in forest Guinea.
Samples were taken and sent to laboratories, particularly Gueckedou (Southeast) which, according to the sources, provided a first result confirming the presence of the Ebola virus. A second confirmation is being treated in a fever laboratory in Conakry.
Four suspects are presently placed in isolation in Nzerekore since Wednesday as another one was placed under medical surveillance on Thursday.
The Ebola virus disease, which broke out had in West Africa in 2013, started in southeast Guinea before spreading to Liberia and Sierra Leone and claimed 30,000 lives in the three countries.
