Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA)- The Sudanese government on Wednesday extended the opening of Adre Border Crossing, an inlet linking Sudan and Chad, to allow for the passage of relief and humanitarian assistance convoys to war ravaged regions in Darfur in western Sudan.
The Sudanese presidency said it was responding to a recommendation by the Second Humanitarian Response Forum, an official grouping of various bodies related to the resolution of the current crisis from a government perspective. The forum was attended by UN, international and national agencies.
“The Government of Sudan has decided to extend the opening of the Adre border crossing to deliver humanitarian aid to those who deserve it,” aterse statement posted by the collective presidency, the Sovereign Council, said.
It added that the government of Sudan reaffirms continuation of cooperation and coordination with international organisations, United Nations agencies and other agencies working in the humanitarian field.
On Tuesday the UN Security Council held an emergency session that called for unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid to affected civilians in Sudan, citing what it described as the unremitting violence in Sudan, raging for 18 months.
The Security Council said this violence is poised to intensify, worsening already alarming levels of human rights violations, food insecurity and displacement.
