Sudan's Trilateral Mechanism meets signatories to Political Framework Agreement

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan's Trilateral Mechanism, comprising the United Nations, African Union (AU) and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has held a series of meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday with the signatories of the Political Framework Agreement to underscore the need for moving forward with the process.

Early this month the representatives of regional and world bodies, collectively known as the Trilateral Mechanism, supervised a broad-based document that would serve as a framework for political settlement in Sudan.

The framework was signed by a number of political parties and former rebel movements.

However, a sizeable number of political forces, including the active resistance committees of the young people that were the driving force for toppling President Omar Bashir in 2019, stayed away. They claimed to have some reservations.

The meeting that brought together representatives of the trilateral committee and joint delegation of signatories to the Political Framework Agreement underscored the need to encourage other groups to join the political process.

The Trilateral Mechanism in a statement on Wednesday said they held two “productive meetings today (Wednesday) and yesterday (Tuesday)” which discussed the next steps on the second phase of the political process.

“The Mechanism welcomes the signatories' commitment to ensuring the transparency of the next phase, and to work towards the participation of a broad range of stakeholders,” the statement underlined, adding that the Trilateral Mechanism remains committed to facilitating the process going forward.
