Sudan: Sudan, Ethiopia to form joint-committee on handling security breaches

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan and Ethiopia have agreed to form a “joint mechanism” to handle security problems along their joint borders, which recently witnessed gangster activities.

The independent daily newspaper, akhbar al youm (Arabic for News of the Day), on Monday said the Sudanese and Ethiopian bordering regions have agreed to form a joint mechanism to handle security problems on the common borders.

Reporting from Damzain, on the Sudanese side of the joint border, the paper said the decision was taken by the joint conference for development of the common border regions that wound up in Rosairis, Blue Nile State, on Sunday.

The conference discussed political, security, social, economic and border trade issues; agreed to reactivate relations in those fields and safeguard the borders against armed robbery, smuggling and human trafficking.

Previous reports indicate that the Shifta (Ethiopian gangsters) often attack villages and farms on the Sudanese side of the borderline.

The conference agreed that a joint committee of each of the two opposite regions get together every six months to examine their common border problems.

The two sides also agreed, the newspaper said, to hinder any activities of armed opposition groups against each other in the joint border zones.
