Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Liberation heroes Andrew Mlangeni and Denis Goldberg have received honorary doctorates from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in recognition of the role they played in dismantling apartheid.
The two stalwarts who both live in Cape Town are the last surviving members of the Rivonia Treason Trial, which saw many of the country’s leading activists – including Nelson Mandela – jailed.
In 1961, Mlangeni was among the first to be sent for military training outside the country. On his return in 1963 he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. After 27 years, he was released from prison. He served as a member of parliament for the ANC from 1994 to 1999.
He was awarded a Doctorate of Public Administration for his “commitment to the fight for a democratic South Africa and a lifetime of service to the people of South Africa”.
Goldberg was imprisoned for 22 years. After his release in 1985 he continued to campaign against apartheid from his base in London.
He was awarded a Doctorate of Engineering for his “selfless contribution to the Struggle for freedom and his unwavering commitment to the development of post-apartheid South Africa”.
