Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the Easter Sunday terror attacks in Sri Lanka which left over 200 people dead.

Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko said Ramaphosa condemned the attacks in the strongest terms and emphasised that in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka, South Africa will continue to use its non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council to prioritise the fight against terrorism and extremist groups across the world.

"The President also wishes a speedy recovery to those injured in these horrific attacks,” Diko said.

The attacks took place at St Sebastian's Church at Negombo, the Ziol Church in Batticaloa and St Anthony's Shrine in Colombo. Three luxury hotels were also targeted.

Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry said 11 foreign nationals were among the dead and there are 25 unidentified bodies believed to be of foreigners.

Ruby Marks, South Africa's Ambassador to Sri Lanka, said there is a blackout on all social media platforms following the horrific bombings. “We give thanks for the safety of our mission staff and I urge you to pray for them and all in Sri Lanka,” she said.
