South African Jews shocked by Toulouse attack
Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The South African Jewish community on Tuesday expressed shock over Monday's cold-blooded killing of a rabbi, his two young sons and a third child in a shooting incident outside a Jewish school in Toulouse, France.
The attacker who escaped on a motorbike is still on the loose and a massive police manhunt is underway.
Mary Kluk, the National chairman of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, has extended the community's heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victim and to the Jewish community of France.
"This tragedy has demonstrated how frighteningly vulnerable innocent people can be when pitiless killers, driven by irrational hatred, target them for attack. We commend the French government for the seriousness with which it is responding to this atrocity and hope that the perpetrator will soon be brought to justice,” said Mary Kluk.
Kluk also said: "while this is yet to be confirmed, all indications point to a racially-motivated hate crime. Previous victims of the same killer are believed to be three men of North African and one of West Indian origin".
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said the killings and those of the soldiers, one of Caribbean and two of Muslim origin, in two attacks last week, appeared to be motivated by racism.
