Senegal: GGA says citizens raise concern over quality of governance in South Africa
Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – Good Governance Africa (GGA), a research and advocacy body, on Wednesday revealed that going by its survey in South Africa, 79 percent of citizens believe that the government is incompetent and corrupt.
In a statement, made available to PANA in Dakar, Senegal, GGA which works to improve government performance on the continent also said more than 70% of South Africans believe that the government has failed to generate employment.
''South African citizens are seriously concerned about the quality of governance in their country, with some 60% agreeing that 'people are giving up hope that the government will listen to them
''The most positive feedback was on pensions and social grants, the latter of which gained a 61.2% positive rating,'' the statement noted.
According to the research body, it has also produced a detailed ranking of the country’s 234 local municipalities, the Government Performance Index (GPI), which shows a pattern of some success and much failure with regard to service delivery, administration and economic development.
''No fewer than 15 of the country’s best municipalities are located in the Western Cape, while the worst-performing local municipalities all in areas that were formerly apartheid 'homelands','' the statement added.
GGA pointed out that both of its survey of national government and the local government rankings in South Africa would be published in the latest issue of its journal, Africa in Fact, in March which includes an analysis of the root causes of failures in South African local government and ways to fix them.
Meanwhile, GGA is a registered not-for-profit research and advocacy organisation that aims to contribute to better governance in Africa. To that end, the body researches, analyses and interprets information to produce fact- based knowledge that empowers citizens and governments alike.
