Rwandan MP files complaint at apex court over "illegal eviction" from parliament

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Rwandan MP Alexandre Dumas Ashinzwuwera, sacked from the Rwandan Parliament last July for severely beating his younger brother, has filed a complaint at the Supreme Court for "illegal eviction," PANA learnt from judicial sources here.

According to his lawyers, Ashinzwuwera suffered from a "misinterpretation of the facts" against him.

They also claimed the Rwandan Parliament had no authority to expel any of its members, especially as his case was still pending in court.

Last February, the MP beat his 12-year-old brother into a state of coma, forcing the Parliament to lift his immunity before evicting him from the institution.

He was later arrested by the police and charged with assault and battery, before being released on bail.
