Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - President Adama Barrow Saturday received President Macky Sall of Senegal and President Umaro Sissoco Emabló of Guinea-Bissau in connection with the inauguration of the OMVG Energy Projects and commissioning of the Soma in Lower River Region substation.
President Adama Barrow launched the first sub-station of the Gambia River Basin Development Organization OMVG, electricity project in Soma in 2019. The other station is expected to be in Brikama West Coast Region.
The 722m-dollar electricity project will benefit four member countries including The Gambia.
The project will connect from the hydroelectric power supply of the Samba Ngallo Dam project interconnection transmission and distribution line in Guinea to the Gambia grid.
The project will give priority to places such as the Kiangs, which have not got electricity since independence in 1965.
Other countries of the OMVG project are Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Guinea Conakry.
In his speech, President Barrow said electricity was a major catalyst for development and the striking electricity demand and supply disparity in the country was enough to highlight the significance of this project.
