Outrage over riot at high-profile football match

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Sports Minister Tokozile Xasa, in Sunday condemned the chaotic riot at a key Premier Soccer League (PSL) fixture in Durban on Saturday night.

Hundreds of Kaizer Chiefs supporters invaded the pitch at the Moses Mabhida Stadium after their side lost 2-0 to Free State Stars in a Nedbank Cup semi-final tie.

Police had to use teargas and stun grenades to disperse the rioters and one female security guard was seriously injured.

Players and coaches fled for their lives and Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela announced his resignation shortly afterwards.

Xasa called on the PSL and stadium management to address the situation. “Football is a beautiful game and I can't be idle while few supporters are ruining it,” he said.
