New cases of Ebola detected in DR Congo

Kinshasa, DR Congo (PANA) - The Africa Regional Office of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday said new cases of Ebola have been declared in DR Congo's North Kivu Province.

WHO said a situation report on Monday by the health authorities in DR Congo said there are eight confirmed cases and six deaths.

It said 573 contacts have been identified and 489 contacts are being monitored.

The African Regional Office of WHO said about three weeks ago that Ebola vaccination had begun in the North Kivu Province where one case was confirmed on 8 October.

It said that people at high risk, including contacts of the confirmed case and first responders, will receive the doses as the health authorities move to curb the spread of the virus.

The confirmed case at that time was a two-year-old boy who died on 6 October in a local health facility. He lived in the same community where three members of the same family died in September after experiencing Ebola-like symptoms.
