New cape Verdian president to be inaugurated 9 September

Praia, Cape Verde (PANA) – The new Cape Verdian president, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, elected on 21 August, will be sworn in 9 September, official sources told PANA here Friday.

Fonseca, candidate of the Movement for democracy, the country’s main opposition party, won the run-off presidential election with 54.16% of the votes as against 45.84% for Manuel Inocêncio Sousa of the ruling African party for Cape Verde independence (PAICV).

However, the national elections commission (CNE) will release the final results on 2 September.

In accordance with the Cape Verdian law, CNE has 14 days to approve the results but the spokesperson of the institution, Maria Joao Novais, said that "if everything went as planned, all the process will be finalized the second day of next month."

According to article 107 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cape Verde, the president of the Republic is invested before Parliament on the last day of his predecessor’s term.

The incumbent president has exceeded the period for his term because of the change on the Constitution which sets a separation, by six months, between the parliamentarian and presidential elections.
