Mbeki, Zuma spat over allegations

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has called on President Jacob Zuma’s office for evidence of allegations that newly-appointed Special Investigations Unit head Willem Heath reportedly levelled against him (Mbeki).

Mbeki’s spokesperson Mukhoni Ratshitanga on Thursday confirmed that a letter has been sent to President Zuma in that regard.

According to a statement from Mbeki’s office, he rejected the allegations that he had initiated two criminal cases against Zuma, who replaced him as the leader of the ANC – and the country – after a bitter feud.

Heath made the claims in an interview with City Press.

These included that Mbeki abused his position to compromise the criminal justice system by blocking some investigations into corrupt practices, and initiated the corruption and rape charges against Zuma by the National Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Zuma's spokesperson Mac Maharaj said the President would investigate the comments made by Heath, but it was unclear what action would be taken .

The official opposition Democratic Alliance has called Heath’s appointment to the SIU “the latest in a series of legal blunders by Zuma’s office”.
