Mandela’s childhood farmhouse stripped by vandals

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Nelson Mandela’s childhood farmhouse in the Eastern Cape has been striped by vandals who have removed windows, doors, pipes and roof tiles.

The Mandela royal family has expressed dismay at the derelict building where the world statesman grew up a century ago. His grandson, Nkosi Mandla Mandela, who heads the Mvezo Traditional Council has called on police to arrest the perpetrators in the desperately poor area.

Mandela was born in the nearby village of Mvezo, schooled in neighbouring Mqekezweni and made his name as a lawyer and political activist in Johannesburg.

Mandla said almost all the cattle at the farm had been moved to Mandela’s nearby Qunu farm where he spent his holidays after his release from prison and during his presidency from 1994 to 1998. He was buried in Qunu in 2013.
