Mali needs 64,000 tonnes of cereals to ensure food security in 2022

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - Mali needs 64,000 tonnes of cereals to support its needs to ensure food security in 2022, Deputy Director of the Food Security Commission Dicko Bassa Diané announced here.

Diane made this known when she addressed the opening ceremony of the 17th ordinary session of the Coordination and Monitoring Committee of Food Security Policies and Programmes (CCSPSA).

The 17th ordinary session of the CCSPSA is a framework for exchange, sharing and consensus on annual food security activities for the actors involved.

The meeting will examine, analyze and approve, among other things, the results of the provisional assessment of the food situation made by the early warning system through the harmonized framework at the end of the 2021-2022 agricultural season.

It will also address the national food security response assessment for 2021 and the provisional planning for 2022, and the difficulties identified among vulnerable groups.

According to the organizers of the meeting, Mali, like other Sahelian countries, is affected by a multidimensional crisis marked by conflict, the COVID-19 health crisis, in addition to the hazards of climate change.

The conflict in Mali has led to the displacement of more than 400,000 people and has negatively impacted the means of production of the population.

The deputy director of Food Security noted that, "in response to food insecurity", her structure is requesting the mobilization of 64,000 tonnes of cereals.

This may seem complicated given the current situation in the country. However, she said innovative solutions to fill the already high gap in the total coverage of the needs to alleviate the difficulties identified.

In this regard, she emphasized that the national food security system was benefiting from new resources for the year 2022 and that "food security actors are working together to manage food and nutritional security throughout the country with the support of partners such as the WFP, among others.
