Mali: Government sets up communication committee for Kidal crisis
Bamako, Mali (PANA) – The Malian government has set up a communication committee for the management of the events that occurred on 17 and 18 May in Kidal, northern Mali, when rebel Tuaregs attacked government forces.
According to a statement from by the Malian ministry of Digital Economy, Communication and Information issued on Wednesday, the goal is to ensure regular and prompt communication in a bid to inform national and international media.
It also aims at ensuring cohesion within governmental communication, and deal with "rumours and useless and dangerous messages which jeopardise the country’s national cohesion".
The committee includes representatives from the Presidency, the Prime minister’s office, Ministry of Defence and Former Combatants, Ministry Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ministry of Safety, National Reconciliation, Solidarity and Development of northern Mali, Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training and Ministry of Culture.
It is placed under the authority of the Ministry of Digital Economy, Communication and Information.
Bloody clashes were reported on Saturday in the city of Kidal between the Malian army and several armed groups who were against the visit to that northern city by Prime minister Moussa Mara.
Fighting has since been raging between government troops and Tuareg rebels who want an independent state in the north. The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon has called for a ceasefire.
