Libya has more than 130,000 internally displaced people, says UNHCR

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - One hundred and thirty-four thousand people are internally displaced in Libya, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday.

In a report, the UNHCR added that the number of refugees and asylum seekers registered in Libya during the same period amounted to more than 42,000, as well as 162 other vulnerable groups who left the country.

Regarding migrants, UNHCR said Libyan authorities intercepted around 3,800 people who disembarked at the seaport of Tripoli, in addition to the rescue of 367 people on board makeshift boats over the past week.

The UN refugee agency said more than 4,000 people were being held in detention centres across the country, including more than 1,000 migrants registered with UNHCR.

It also said it was continuing to provide assistance and services to asylum seekers in Libya, calling on the international community and the Libyan authorities to work with them to alleviate the plight of migrants and refugees in the country.

The UNHCR had requested $70 million in funding for the year 2022 to assist refugees but only 27% was raised during the year, the statement said.
