Libya: Pro and anti-Parliament supporters demonstrate in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – Libyans on Saturday took to the streets in several cities of the country to demonstrate support to various disagreeing political groups and to denounce terrorism, all showing that the North African country remains divided about its uncertain future, three years since the fall of Muammar Kaddafi.

According to reports reaching here, there were demonstrations backing the newly formed Parliament as well as others in support of the National General Congress (NGC).

In Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi (East), Sebha (South) and other cities, hundreds of Libyans expressed support to operation "Fajr Libya", a coalition of armed groups bringing together fighters from Misrata and those of Islamist stance which recently routed Zenten rebels, supporters of the liberal camp, from the Libyan capital.

Demonstrators expressed opposition to 'Operation Karama' conducted in Benghazi by retired General Khalifa Haftar and backed by the Libyan Army officers to defeat the Islamists in support of the NGC and the government it will form, dissociating themselves from any attempt to overthrow the 17 February revolution.

Other demonstrators, who demanded the association of ex-rebels to retake decisions, denounced the leaders of Egypt and United-Arab Emirates accusing them of conducting secretly air strikes on Tripoli, thus violating the country’s sovereignty.

In the eastern cities of Tobruk and Benghazi, civil society organizations demonstrated to express support to the elected Parliament and denounced acts of terrorism perpetrated by extremist armed groups.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted Resolution 2174 calling for an immediate ceasefire in Libya, reestablishment of State institutions, the opening of inclusive political dialogue, the legal proceedings against those responsible for violations of the international law and human rights and those who supported armed groups to loot Libya's crude oil and natural resources.

Also, the same resolution expressed concern about the increasing presence of Al-Qaeda in Libya and underlined the need to counter it by all means, with reference to Chapter 7 of the UN Charter authorizing the use of force.
