Libya: Over 400 illegal immigrants arrested in Tripoli

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya's security services Thursday arrested more than 400 illegal immigrants on their way to Europe as the UN prepares to endorse an EU military mission aimed at combating traffickers, a security source said.

The arrested illegal immigrants, including 12 women and children, came from eight African countries, the security source revealed.

The operation was foiled after residents of the neighborhood of Garguaresh discovered the whereabouts of the illegal aliens.

Over the past weeks, Libya has witnessed an unprecedented influx of illegal aliens intending to end up in Europe through Libyan coasts.

According to the source, the trip oftentimes ends up in tragedy with over 1,800 people dying on aboard makeshift boats.

The European Union (EU) now has a policy towards the treatment and the granting of political asylum to immigrants.

It has also sent a proposal to the UN Security Council to enable military action aimed at sinking boats operated by traffickers before they leave the Libyan coast.
