Libya: MPs boycott Parliament, denounce violence

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – A group of Libyan MPs who boycotted proceedings of Parliament in the eastern city of Tobruk on Thursday denounced the systematic escalation of fighting in the country.

Parliament was scheduled to meet in Tobruk under the framework of dialogue launched in the southern-western city of Ghadames under the aegis of the United Nations, but some MPs said in a communique that they boycotted it because of the violence and urged the international community to take a serious view of the developments.

Troops loyal to retired General Khalifa Haftar, backed by army units, on Wednesday launched a military operation in Benghazi, dubbed "Karama", to take control of the city from of Islamist armed groups, while the army has since Tuesday been attacking the southern city of Kikla.

The violence has left more than 50 dead and 100 injured.

The MPs said the Kikla killing and the air bombardments on Benghazi and Derna, in which foreign parties were suspected to participate, was an attempt to compromise the dialogue.

MPs participating in the dialogue underlined the legitimacy of the elected organs, respect of the constitutional declaration and its amendments, as well as concern to see to national interest, the country’s unity and the integrity of the Libyan territory.
