Libya: Armed clashes in Tripoli, Benghazi leave 250,000 displaced, says UN

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – Some 250,000 have fled their homes in the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi over the past few months, following the violent armed clashes in the two cities and across the country, according to the UN Support mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The figure includes the 150,000 displaced in the other cities across the country, says a UNSMIL report drafted jointly with the UN High commission of Human rights (UNCHR) and made public on Thursday.

It said that 100,000 immigrant workers in Libya have also left the country during the armed clashes between rival militias.

The UN report warns against the serious violation of the international law, particularly humanitarian right, in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, saying the continued violence would reflect negatively on Libyan civilians.

The report, which covers the period mid-March to late August, said that during that period, dozens of civilians were abducted in Tripoli and Benghazi based on their tribal, family or religious affiliation. Such abductees are still reported missing.
