Libya: 8 killed in new wave of violence in Benghazi

Benghazi, Libya (PANA) - Eight people were killed Sunday in a new wave of violence in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi, which has been the scene of armed clashes.

The victims are two policemen, a soldier and five civilians, all shot dead by unidentified gunmen, according to the medical centre of Benghazi that received their bodies.

Benghazi, where the Libyan uprising started in 2011, is presently under the control of the Islamist armed militias who are accused of being behind the killings.

For several weeks, fighting has raged in the district of Benina, in Benghazi, where a military air base and a civilian airport are under the control of troops loyal to retired army general Khalifa Haftar, backed by the units of the Libyan army, and which the Islamists have been trying to conquer.
