Liberia: Party alleges irregularities, fraud; threatens legal action

Monrovia, Liberia (PANA) – The opposition Liberty Party (LP) has alleged “numerous incidents of irregularities and fraud” during the October 10 presidential and legislative polls in Liberia.

“We are further investigating the situation and will provide a thorough evidence-based report to NEC (National Election Commission),” the party said in a statement published in local dailies Thursday.

The LP said on the basis of the ‘discoveries’, it was calling on the electoral body to “immediately halt” further announcement of the election results, adding, “If NEC does not cooperate with our request, we will take the appropriate legal action.

The NEC is expected to begin announcing official results of Tuesday’s polls on Thursday, NEC Chairman, Jerome Korkoya, disclosed Wednesday.

“There is absolutely no excuse for hindering Liberians from exercising their democratic rights,” the LP, which is performing below expectation in the preliminary results, said Thursday.

It, however, called on its supporters and all Liberians to remain calm and peaceful as the party is working to resolve the issues behind its protest.

The LP is among Liberia’s top five political parties and is led by veteran corporate lawyer, Charles Brumskine, who is taking a third shot at the presidency.
