Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Kenyan Premier League side Kariobangi Sharks pipped their English Premier League counterparts, Everton, 4-3 in a historic friendly match in Nairobi Sunday.
The match, sponsored by Kenya's leading sports betting company, SportPesa, ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time, stretching into post-match penalties.
Sharks shot into the lead at the fully-packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in the 27th minute.
The stadium has a 65,000-seater capacity.
Duke Abuya capitalized on Everton's defensive blunder to fire home.
Joe Williams equalized for the English side in the 54th minute, shaking the net with a well-taken free-kick.
In the shootout, Sven Yidah, goalkeeper Brian Bwire, George Abege and Geoffrey Lemu all converted for Sharks while Abuya blasted wide.
Bwire saved two shots and converted one.
Both teams used the friendly to gauge their readiness for their respective national leagues which kick off in August.
The winner of the annual friendly match of the SportsPesa Cup featuring teams from Kenya and Tanzania, meets Everton.
SportPesa, sponsors of the Kenyan Premier League, are also shirt sponsors of a number of English Premier League teams, among them Everton.
