Kenya: Kenyan opposition gives final list of demands before concession
Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Kenya’s main opposition, the National Super Alliance (NASA), said it was prepared to concede defeat if it was allowed to access the servers to verify possible hacking and a review of its final list of election irregularities.
“We have given the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) an offer that will bring this matter to an end. They should give access to the servers which has the raw data,” said James Orengo, the chief legal counsel of the opposition.
NASA chief Presidential agent, Musalia Mudavadi, said the National tallying process had been marred by the receipt of results from election centres which were not gazetted by the IEBC.
“There are results coming from those stations. They have only received forms from 29,000 out of the 40,833,” Mudavadi told reporters at the Bomas of Kenya, the country’s national cultural centre.
Saying that the process would take longer to end, Orengo said returning officers had been required to be present at the Bomas tallying centre.
According to NASA, the results had mistakes which include a five-page report with serious elections flaws.
The IEBC was expected to announce the results shortly on Friday but the election officials said they required additional time to review results from election centres.
At least 17 polling centres were still being verified.
IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba said given the magnitude of the work, a further delay in the final results was to be expected. “We are able to account for 286 form 34B,” Chiloba said.
He said there was a need for further clearance of the results.
“We have to verify its source. We have to be sure where it came from. We have to register receipts and make copies with the agents. It is likely to take longer. It is important to be accurate rather than rush and end up with mistakes,” Chiloba said.
