Kenya: Former Kenyan First Lady laid to rest

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Former Kenyan First Lady Lucy Kibaki was laid to rest after a solemn funeral service at her home town of Othaya, Njeri, which was attended by some 20,000 mourners and national and regional leaders.

The former Mrs Kibaki died while undergoing treatment at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London on 26 April.

Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete joined Kenyan mourners including Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, local politicians and family and friends of the Mwai Kibaki family.

President Kenyatta appealed to Kenyans to follow the example of the former First Lady by emphasizing family values, respect and personal discipline.

Mourners recalled the acts of mercy performed by Lucy Kibaki, who died at age 82 years, serving as pioneer activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the resettlement of homeless squatters and support for the orphans and less privileged in society.

In his tribute, Kikwete hailed the late Lucy Kibaki as a diligent servant of the people who would be remembered for her service to a wide cross section of the Kenyan society and East Africa in general.
