Ghana Airport renamed Accra International Airport
Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The Ghanaian authorities have renamed the Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport, said the airport was previously known as Accra International Airport before being changed in 1967 to Kotoka International Airport to honour General Emmanuel Kotoka, who was one of the leaders of the 24 February 1966 coup that overthrew Ghana's first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
General Kotoka was killed in a foiled coup attempt in 1967 and his body was found at the airport.
The statement said it has been deemed appropriate to return the airport to its former and internationally recognised name.
The Ministry assured the public that the name change will not affect airport operations, safety standards, or international travel.
It further noted that the airport code, “ACC,” as registered with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), has always remained the same and will continue to be used.
The new name will involve the systematic update of official documentation, relevant statutory instruments, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications, and other related communication materials.
The government has called on the general public, stakeholders, and international partners to cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
