Genocide survivors márch against acquittal of alleged perpetrators

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) – One of the main associations of survivors of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, “Ibuka” (Remember), on Monday mobilized hundreds of demonstrators in Kigali to denounce the recent acquittal of the Rwandan international criminal tribunal of two former government officials for alleged genocide actions.

The survivors association said it brought together about 1,000 people.

In a statement made public on Monday, the chairman of Ibuka, Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu, said that the acquittal declared by TPIR was humiliation to the victims of the genocide, and another way to mock the survivors of the tragedy.

The survivors of the genocide have expressed their frustrations at several acquittals that UN judicial institution have made.

These include the release in 2009 of an alleged genocide perpetrator, Protais Zigiranyirazo, commonly known as "Mister Z as well as the Catholic priest Hormisdas Nsengimana.

Since the opening of the first trial on 9 January 1997, the tribunal has issued 55 judgments of premiere instance concerning 75 people.
