Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - The Gambia will start Ramadan 2020 Friday, April 24, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) announced here Thursday.
The holy month this year will be marked differently from previous ones, as the coronavirus pandemic has stopped much of the world’s activities, including places of worship.
In The Gambia when Ramadan starts, many express the wish that the government will ease the lockdown by assisting people with necessary items such as food supplies.
More than 1.6 billion Muslims around the world will mark the month, during which believers abstain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset.
The Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Islam’s two holiest sites, are effectively empty as populations are under a full curfew to stop the virus from spreading.
