Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - The governments of the Gambia and Senegal are at an advanced stage in finalizing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between their two national utilities companies - Société National d'Éléctricité du Sénégal (SENELEC) and the national water and electricity company of Gambia (NAWEC).
PANA report on Monday that finalization of the MoU and the signing a highly-concessional draft Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between the two companies will be presented for approval by their respective boards for final signature.
According to an official statement in Banjul, the Gambian capital, the Gambian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Fafa Sangany, led a delegation of senior officials of his ministry to Dakar, Senegal, as first step towards energy cooperation between The Gambia and Senegal.
The move will also build on an already special relation between the two sister republics.
According to the statement, the PPA deal will connect cross-border points of KeurAyib (Zone 1), Karang (Zone 2), TambaKunda (zone 3) and ensure immediate supply by SENELEC to NAWEC between 3 MW and 10 MW and possibly expand as the capacity of the network grows.
PANA report that supply from SENELEC will significantly complement NAWEC`s efforts and boost electricity in rural parts of Gambia with 24 hours of electricity supply.
The release further said, the objective of the project is to align the tiny West African nation policies, strategies and mutually defend their interest given that the country also belong to the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP), Gambia River Basin Development Organisation (OMVG), Senegalo-Gambia Permanent Secretariat and the Mauritania-Senegal-Gambia-Guinea Bissau-Guinea Conakry Basin (MSGBC geological Basin).
