Friendlies: Algeria stun Senegal in Dakar, friendlies round-up
Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - Algeria's victory over African champions, Senegal, is the highlight of friendlies as national teams were in action on Tuesday, stepping up preparations for upcoming qualifiers and tournaments.
A number of intriguing clashes took place between continental heavyweights.
Senegal 0-1 Algeria
Algeria claimed a morale-boosting 1-0 victory away to reigning African champions Senegal in Dakar.
Fares Chaibi scored the only goal midway through the second half at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium as Desert Foxes triumphed over their recent AFCON final foes.
Goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea starred for the Algerians, denying Liverpool star Sadio Mane on several occasions.
The win continues Algeria's long unbeaten run against the Teranga Lions.
Egypt 1-3 Tunisia
Tunisia earned an impressive 3-1 victory over Egypt in a lively friendly in Cairo.
The North Africans stormed ahead through Issam Jebali and Ahmed Fathi before Omar Kamal pulled one back for the hosts.
But Hamza Rafia struck late on to secure the win for Tunisia over a much-changed Egypt side.
The Pharaohs were missing key stars like Mohamed Salah and were second-best for long periods.
Morocco 1-0 Burkina Faso
Morocco continued their strong form since the World Cup with a 1-0 victory against Burkina Faso.
Star performer Azzedine Ounahi grabbed the only goal midway through the first half in the clash in France.
The Atlas Lions reached the World Cup semi-finals last year and look in good shape ahead of the AFCON.
Burkina Faso offered a stern test but found no way past impressive Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou.
South Africa 1-0 DR Congo
A solitary strike by Lyle Foster ensured South Africa edged DR Congo in an international friendly match played at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday.
Coach Hugo Broos brought on a stronger squad which was led by the trio of Percy Tau, Zakhele Lepasa and Foster, who is enjoying a good run of form at his new club, Burnley FC, in England.
After a good control of the opening proceedings, the hosts found the back of the net through a move straight from the practice ground that started off with a corner kick by Tau, before a good build-up into the box for Foster to fire home the only goal of the evening in the 25th minute.
The Leopards put up an impressive showing away from home with the lively Silas Vumpa and captain Chadrack Akolo troubling the South Africans throughout the evening.
The matches provided a platform for the continent's heavyweights to build momentum before qualifiers resume.
With a busy schedule ahead, match sharpness and fitness were high on the agenda during this international break.
