France to help improve management of water resources in Central Africa

Brazzaville, Congo (PANA) - France is to provide 1.7 million euros to improve the hydrological monitoring of water resources in the Congo Basin, a diplomatic source said on Friday in Brazzaville.

The money would be provided to the International Commission of the Congo-Oubangui-Sangha (ICCOS).

The documents for the funding have signed in the Congolese capital by the Secretary General of the ICCOS, Simon Sakibeke, the Ambassador of France in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Pierre Jacquemot and the director of the French Agency for Development (AFD) in Kinshasa, Christian Yoka.

The proposed monitoring of water resources is funded by the French Global Environment Fund (FFEM) to the tune of 1.3 million euros for a period of three years.

Its goal is to help develop a policy on integrated management of water resources and assist in planning decisions and water management.

It complements the actions already undertaken in collaboration with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the FFEM, the German Cooperation, the European Union and the African Water Facility.

The second agreement relates to supporting the ICCOS, which is financed by an AFD grant of 400,000 euros.

Its overall objective is to support and assist, under the authority of the Secretary General of the ICCOS, development actions for the integrated management of water resources in the Congo Basin through the implementation of technical assistance and a better coordination of all border agencies of the basin.

ICCOS was established in 1999 with the membership of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

ICCOS, a specialised body of the Commission of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), promotes the sustainable management of water resources in the Congo Basin for the well-being of the people.

Originally directed to promote inland navigation, its mandate was expanded in 2007 to the integrated management of trans-boundary water resources.
