FIFA to help Kenya revamp football

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - World football governing body, FIFA, has committed US$ 5,000 in funding to help get Kenya’s football activities up and running.

The funds will go towards soccer development and establishment of football structures.

The funds, to be provided by the Financial Assistance Programme (FAP), include bonus paid to member associations following the success of South Africa 2010.

South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup last year.

FIFA made the kind gesture when the Kenyan delegation, led by the newly-elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chairman, Sam Nyamweya, paid the federation president, Sepp Blatter, a courtesy call in the football governing body's headquarters, Zurich, Switzerland, during the week.

Blatter also assured Nyamweya of his continued support and promised to help the new office to develop the standards of Kenyan soccer. During the meeting, they also discussed wide-ranging soccer issues, with particular focus on Kenya.

They discussed women soccer and the establishment of football structures.

“President Blatter invited me to come here. We discussed a number of subjects and spoke most of all about the state of Kenyan football. He assured me of his support and that of FIFA,” Nyamweya was quoted as saying.

Nyamweya has made it his brief to bring stability to Kenyan football, which has gone through many ups and downs in recent times.

”My main objective is to bring all the stakeholders of Kenyan football together. We have had conflict for many years and we’ve even had two national federations. That has all come to an end now that democracy has spoken,” he said.
