Ethiopian crisis: Ethiopian delegations hold peace talks in South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The African Union (AU) is hosting high-level delegations to discuss the peace process for Ethiopia in South Africa.

AU-led peace talks, which had been postponed once for logistical reasons, are being conducted through a high level panel of eminent Africans, established purposefully for the Ethiopian peace process.

The panel is led by Olusegun Obasanjo, AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa and former President of Nigeria, along with Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya, and Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former Deputy President of South Africa and Member of the AU Panel of the Wise.

The warring sides are seeking to secure a peaceful solution to the vicious two-year conflict.

"We count on all parties' political leadership and sense of responsibility to work together to transform commitments into action - to end human suffering and put Ethiopia on path of reconciliation and reconstruction,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Twitter.

And Pope Francis on Sunday expressed concern about the tensions in the predominantly Christian country.

"May the efforts of the parties for dialogue lead to a genuine path of reconciliation," he tweeted.

Addis Ababa issued a statement saying it views the talks as “an opportunity to peacefully resolve the conflict and consolidate the improvement of the situation on the ground”.
