Egypt: Gunmen kill 9 in northern Sinai

Cairo, Egypt (PANA) – Nine people including two children have been killed in the city of Ariche, in the Sinai peninsula, northeast Egypt, in two attacks on Wednesday night, sources at the Egyptian Interior ministry said on Thursday.

The first attack claimed the life for a girl and slightly injured her mother while the eight others, also including a child, were found dead in the second attack.

The two attacks were perpetrated by unidentified gunmen at a house in the city.

The Interior ministry confirmed that the explosions occurred in the city of Ariche, leaving several casualties, adding that the security forces were carrying out patrols in the zone to arrest the perpetrators and determine the circumstances of the attack.

Armed terrorist groups operate in northern Sinai with the most well-known being "Ansar Beit Mouqadas" which has proclaimed the "Wilayatou Sinaï" or the Sinai region, and pledged allegiance to the organisation "Daesh".

The Egyptian army and security forces are carrying out a military campaign against those groups.
