EU parliamentary VP urges peace between Sudan, South Sudan

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, currently visiting Sudan, has stressed the need for Khartoum and Juba to achieve lasting peace between them.

At a meeting here Tuesday with the Speaker of the Sudanese National Assembly (parliament), Ahmed Ibrahim al-Tahir, the EU parliamentarian discussed the peace and cooperation agreement signed by Sudan and South Sudan in Ethiopia on 27 September, 2012.

The meeting also reviewed efforts being made to improve ties between Sudan and the European Union (EU).

Speaking at the meeting, the Sudanese MP (Tahir) reiterated his country’s willingness to establish good relations with South Sudan and called on the EU to commit to ironing out the differences in the positions of Khartoum and Juba with a view to finding a lasting solution to the pending issues between the two nations.

Tahir urged the EU to bring more investment to Sudan instead of offering assistance to the African nation - a request Mr. Pittella readily agreed to back home.
