EU condemns killings in Sudan's Darfur regoon

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) - The European Union (EU) says it is appalled about reports of deadly clashes between communities in West-Darfur during the past days and weeks, resulting in a high number of casualties and the destruction of health facilities.

In a statement on Tuesday, the EU foreign policy chief, Joseph Borrell, said: "It is time violence is put to an end and perpetrators are brought to justice."

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has also deplored the killings of civilians in Kereneik locality, West Darfur, as well as the attacks on health facilities last Sunday and called for an immediate end to the violence.

At least 168 people are reported to have been killed and more than 100 injured in the violence.

The EU said all signatories of the Juba Peace Agreement "bear a joint responsibility for the protection of civilians".

The creation and training of joint security keeping forces by the Sudanese Armed Forces and armed movements under the Juba Peace Agreement is urgently needed and needs to be expedited, Mr. Borrell said.

He added that the EU stands ready to provide humanitarian aid to those in need and asked the authorities to facilitate free, safe and unhindered access to humanitarian actors on the ground.
