ECOWAS Chief pledges support to regional power regulatory body

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Reiterating his commitment to the realization of the mission and objectives of the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA), the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador Désiré Kadré Ouédraogo, has pledged to facilitate the movement of the Authority to its permanent site in Accra, Ghana,

Ouédraogo, who led a six-person delegation on an unscheduled visit to the ERERA office on earlier this week, explained that he was in Accra to attend the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a biolarvicide factory in Ghana in support of the ECOWAS Malaria Elimination Campaign.

During the brief visit, the Chairman of ERERA, El Hadj Ibrahima Thiam, presented some ERERA staff to the president and took him on a facility tour of the section of the Ghana Energy Commission’s building where the ERERA headquarters is temporarily located.

He commended and encouraged ERERA’s pioneer staff for their dedication in spite of the teething challenges, promising to pay another visit soon.

ERERA was set up to regulate cross-border trade of electricity in West Africa.

Its objectives include regulating cross-border electricity connections and trading among ECOWAS Member States; establishing a clear and transparent tariff setting methodology for regional power pooling; facilitating the setting up of regulatory and economic environment for the development of the regional market, as well as establishing effective dispute resolution methods among stakeholders in the regional market.
