DR Congo: MONUSCO chief urges reversal of decision to UN official

Kinshasa, DR Congo (PANA) - Special Representative of the UN Secretary General Martin Kobler, who is also chief of the UN Mission for DR Congo, MONUSCO), has urged the Congolese authorities to reconsider their decision to expel Scott Campbell, Director of the UN Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHR).

In a statement issued here Sunday, Mr. Kobler expressed confidence in Mr. Campbell for a job well done, in reference to his report on the human rights situation in the country, saying he effectively executed the mandate given to MONUSCO by the UN Security Council.

He said the report that was jointly issued by MONUSCO and the UNJHR were important catalysts for good governance that leads to stability.

He said the report would be important in the fight against impunity in DR Congo, adding that the comments made on the report by the Congolese Interior Minister were also included in the report.

Campbell, who has been in DR Congo since Sept. 2011, left Kinshasa on Friday evening for a vacation, according to MONUSCO.

In its report on human right violations, UNJHR listed nine extrajudicial executions and 32 forced disappearances, during operation 'Likofi' conducted by the country's police, PNC, 15 Nov. 2013 and 15 Feb. 2014 against criminals in Kinshasa.

According to the report, those extrajudicial executions and forced disappearances were committed against civilians by the PNC agents.
