Chinese President Xi Jinping due in Tanzania Sunday

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (PANA) – Newly-elected Chinese President Xi Jinping, is due here Sunday for a two-day state visit at the invitation of the Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, Dar Es Salaam confirmed Thursday.

According to the official programme, made available to PANA, the two presidents will, on the first day of the visit, hold official talks on bilateral issues to be followed with a state banquet.

On Monday, President Xi is scheduled to have private consultations with Tanzania’s former president Benjamin Mkapa and President Ali Mohamed Shein of Zanzibar.

Before departing the same day, Xi will visit a cemetery at Gongo la Mboto on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam where Chinese workers who died during construction of the Tanzania-Zambia railway were buried.

This will be the Chinese leader’s first trip to Africa after his election. The tour will also take him to South Africa and Congo.

Speaking to journalists in Beijing on the eve of the trip, Xi stated that China and Africa, being members of the developing world, shared extensive common interests.

He stressed that China would continue to support and promote Africa's efforts to achieve peace, stability, prosperity and development, seek strength through unity, and participate in international affairs on the basis of equality.
